Trading EURUSD on NFP Day: Payrolls, Wages, and Unemployment Together
NFP is not just the payroll headline. Average hourly earnings shape inflation expectations and unemployment shapes the soft-landing view. Conflicting components often create a first move and reversal in EURUSD.
Build the chart or workflow
Before the release, mark Asia highs and lows, the London range, and nearby daily levels. Read all three components, then check whether DXY and short US yields confirm.
How to interpret the result
The first-minute wick often includes spread expansion and algorithmic sweeps. Wait for at least one execution-timeframe close and use a retest to distinguish acceptance from a liquidity grab.
Common failure modes
Tight pre-release stops, normal position size, or a conclusion based only on payrolls all create uncontrolled event risk.
A repeatable checklist
- Reduce size
- read all components
- wait for a close
- check DXY and yields
- log slippage separately from planned risk
Can this be used as a standalone trading signal?
No. Treat it as one piece of context. Price structure, liquidity, execution cost, and a predefined invalidation point still decide whether a trade is justified.
When should the setup be checked again?
Recheck whenever the symbol, exchange feed, interval, session definition, or indicator input changes. Those choices can materially change what the chart shows.
