Intraday VWAP on EURUSD: Useful Without Centralized FX Volume?

Intraday VWAP on EURUSD: Useful Without Centralized FX Volume?

Spot FX has no centralized exchange volume, so chart VWAP depends on the provider’s trade or quote proxy. It is an average for that source, not the global EURUSD cost basis.

Build the chart or workflow

Keep one liquid source and define the reset. You can study a trading day, London session, or New York session, but the rule must remain stable within a sample.

How to interpret the result

Trend days often stay on one side of VWAP, while mean-reversion days cross repeatedly. The first post-open retest and deviation bands are more useful than fading every touch.

Common failure modes

Comparing precise decimals across providers, ignoring reset timezone, or assuming inevitable reversion creates false precision.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Keep one source
  2. document reset timezone
  3. classify trend versus mean reversion
  4. require structure
  5. revalidate after any feed change
Practical questions:

Can this be used as a standalone trading signal?

No. Treat it as one piece of context. Price structure, liquidity, execution cost, and a predefined invalidation point still decide whether a trade is justified.

When should the setup be checked again?

Recheck whenever the symbol, exchange feed, interval, session definition, or indicator input changes. Those choices can materially change what the chart shows.
